Head Lice Treatment

OVERVIEW

Head lice affect millions of preschool and elementary school aged children each year, and almost anyone that comes within close proximity to them. These parasites infestations are typically found on peoples heads, and is also know as pediculosis. These very small parasitic insects live in the scalp and feed on your blood.

CAUSES

The most common cause of contracting head lice is coming in contact with a person already infested. This is most common where head-to-head contact occurs during school, playtime or sporting activities, or any time and place where people are in close physical contact with one another. Head lice can't fly or jump, and they're not transmitted from pets to humans. Although less common, they can also spread via contact with contaminated personal belongings such as clothing, hats, combs and brushes, pillows, blankets or home upholstered furnishings.

RISK LEVEL

The highest risk for getting head lice is direct contact with someone who is already infected. Cleanliness and personal hygiene have little impact on whether you get lice or not. Young children, preschool through elementary, are the highest risk category for infestation, which then often is passed on to other family members. It is more common for females to get head lice than males. The lice cause a significant irritation causing you to scratch the infested area, which results in the breaking of the skin, followed by infection. If an infection has occurred, your should see a doctor immediately.

SYMPTOMS

The most common symptom for head lice is extreme itchiness. This is caused by a reaction from a fluid emitted from the lice as they are feeding on your scalp, which can cause a redness or bumps in the infested area. It is possible to experience no itching, particularly if this is the first time you have been infested. LIce appear in 3 forms of their life-cycle, and they are Nit (eggs), Nymph (baby) and Adult. Common infestation areas for adult lice are behind the ears and along the neckline. The Nit are tiny and can easily be mistaken for dandruff, and can not be easily brushed or combed out of the hair.
