OVERVIEW

Although there are various forms of fungi that can cause infection, the most common nail fungus (Trichophyton rubrum, Onychomycosis, Tinea Unguium), occurs when the fungi begins to infect the nail or the nail bed (the skin located under the nail). Generally this will start as a yellowing or white spot that appears under the nail, and then as it spreads deeper will cause a more drastic discoloring, a thickening of the nail, and brittle, ragged edges on the nail. This is not only unsightly, but can be quite painful.

CAUSES

Exactly where a person contracts a fungus infection is difficult to pinpoint since fungi are everywhere that a warm, moist environment is present. The most common locations where the infection can be contracted are warm, moist areas such as showers or bathroom floors, sweaty shoes, locker rooms, swimming pools and similar environments. These areas provide the perfect environment for the fungi to thrive and multiply.

Breathability also is important for nails. Nail polish and fake nails are believed to increase the likelihood of contracting a nail infection.

A fungi infection can be contracted from person to person by sharing towels and grooming items such as clippers and files. If you have Athletes Foot, the fungus could possibly migrate from your skin to your nails.

Reduced blood circulation can increase the likelihood of infection due to reduced ability for your body to detect the infection and defend itself against it.

Good hygiene is important in the prevention of a fungi infection, and thorough drying of cleaned areas to prevent unwanted moisture is a critical step in this process.

RISK LEVEL

Risk level is highest among the elderly, those with psoriasis, those frequently exposed to warm and moist environments, barefoot walking in damp public places, those with Athletes Foot or skin and/or nail injury. Those with diabetes or circulation problems, or weak immune systems are also more susceptible to infection.

SYMPTOMS

Discoloration of the nail, thickening and crumbling or ragged edges are common visual symptoms. This can be more than just unsightly, but quite uncomfortable and painful. Left untreated the infection can result in permanent damage to the nail and/or the nail bed.
